Summer Solstice — the Longest Day

The Summer Solstice is one of the most important dates in traditional Chinese culture. It generally occurs on June 20th, 21st, or 22nd in the Gregorian calendar.

In north China, at the Summer Solstice, daytime is much longer than nighttime, but in the south the difference is only about two hours. The length of daytime reaches 15 hours in Beijing and 17 hours at higher latitudes.

The Celebration of 'Summer Solstice'

Besides the festivals, the ancient Chinese also took a holiday on the Summer Solstice. The holiday activities differed individually, but there was one unifying activity: eating noodles!

The days around the time of the summer solstice were when wheat became ripe. Therefore, making noodles out of the wheat not only came in handy for the festival, but also allowed people to taste the new wheat harvest. Noodles also symbolize longevity in Chinese culture. At Summer Solstice, cold noodle dishes are popular as they help to cool the body during the hot weather.

In some regions in China, steamed dumplings and buns are eaten during Summer Solstice as they are thought to bring good luck for the upcoming harvest season. In some regions in China, fruits such as lychees are eaten during Summer Solstice to keep the body cool during the hot summer season.
