NORTHERN DRAGON
|
Northern Dragon Kung fu is a traditionally taught self-defense art passed down directly from teacher to student for hundreds of years. From Kwangtung Province, China, to contemporary New Jersey, these techniques have remained pure as has the instruction of the style. The art is taught progressively from proper breathing utilizing qigong, to basic stances, stepping patterns, blocks, strikes, and kicks; to basic chin na techniques; to basic shuai jiao and takedowns; and on to more advanced techniques. This is a complete art that will teach you to defend yourself effectively.
Northern Dragon Kung fu is taught in stages that build one upon the next. Instruction begins with basics--breathing, stances, stepping patterns, blocks, strikes, and kicks. Students progress from there to exercises that work those basic skills to perfection. The next stage is forms training to practice using stances and stepping patterns with blocks, strikes, and kicks in varied combinations. In addition to the external physical nature of the art, students also learn about internal aspects such as the philosophies of Sun Tzu, Lao Tzu, and Chuang Tzu. Most importantly students learn about Wude, the Martial Virtues. There are no pre-requisite training requirements--anybody can learn Northern Dragon techniques from beginners with absolutely no martial arts experience, to ranked practitioners of other martial arts. Everyone begins at the same starting point--Kai Shan, or beginner. |
