Ba Duan Jin Qigong
Shaolin Kung fu Institute Flemington offers classes in the internal art of Qigong . Qigong (Chi Kung) is mindful energy work. It is a form of standing meditation. Qigong develops and cultivates the chi (life energy) that exists within all of us by focusing on breathing and motion to promote health through the circulation of chi through the inner organs and throughout the entire body. There are many types of Qigong; we study the Eight Piece Silk Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) Qigong and the Yi Jin Jing (Muscle Tendon Change Classic) Qigong.
What is Qigong?
Qigong is energy work—the circulation of Qi (energy/breath) throughout your body through the work of your muscles and organs (gong). Qigong exercises are characterized by the use of diaphragmatic/abdominal breathing, and gentle movements of the arms and legs that stretch muscles and massage internal organs. Qigong exercises are usually practiced standing in place with no need for much room. Studies have shown benefits in increasing bone density in prevention of osteoporosis, increased balance, lowered blood pressure, and decreased stress levels in Qigong practitioners. Through the practice of Qigong, Qi may be focused and manipulated for increased wellness and vitality. Qigong also improves mental acuity and decreases tension through the practice of mindful meditation.
Internal (soft) and External (hard) Qigong
Qigong is practiced in two variations: hard and soft.
Hard Qigong is practiced to develop and strengthen the musculature and bones using dynamic tension training by slowly moving tensed muscles through a range of simple motions.
Soft Qigong is the practice of using diaphragmatic/abdominal breathing and gentle flowing arm movements to circulate chi throughout the body. Soft Qigong is also known as Standing Meditation because of the mindful, meditative aspect of the practice.
There are no prerequisite requirements to take this training program as a course separate from training in Northern Dragon Kung fu.
